Making Care Work: Employed Mothers in the New Childcare Market by Lynet Uttal,

Making Care Work: Employed Mothers in the New Childcare Market by Lynet Uttal,
As ever more women work outside the home, many families employ childcare workers. In the absence of government regulations or social models that clearly define the childcare provider's role, mothers worry about the quality of their children's care. By connecting the personal level of mothers' daily experiences to the larger political, economic, and ideological context of child care, Lynet Uttal describes and explains how mothers rely on their relationship with the providers to monitor and influence the quality of care their children receive. Whereas other studies have emphasized how mothers undervalue and exploit providers, this book paints a more nuanced picture, arguing that the ties between adults who share the care of children creates neither heroes nor victims. This ethnography reveals that mothers are often reluctant to meet directly with their childcare providers to discuss concerns. Uttal shows how mothers walk a fine line between wanting to believe in the quality of care they have chosen, and the fact that they might have made a mistake. Catalyzed by their worries about the quality of care, mothers develop complex relationships with the women -- and most are women -- who look after their children.

Who Shall Live?: Health, Economics, and Social Choice by Victor R. Fuchs,
Who Shall Live?: Health, Economics, and Social Choice by Victor R. Fuchs,
Reviews from First Edition"It is the most useful little volume in recent years for the general reader ... Page for page, there is more fact, and more illuminatingprinciple, than in many books ten times its length". The New York Times book section"... superbly intelligent commentary on American health care ... another piece of evidence that the economists such as Fuchs arebecoming the shrewdest of the public moralists for this generation". The Washington Post Book WorldThis is a fine book, written by one of the most acute observers of the health scene in the United States today. We need more economists like Victor Fuchs to help us rationalize the increasingly expensive and chaotic system of health services. I agree most emphatically with his conclusions.John H KnowlesMD, President of The Rockefeller Foundation, 1974Overall, this book is a magnificent achievement. Every physician who reads it will find a great deal to think about. An enormous amount of information is compressed into 151 pages.Roger PlattMD, Consulting Editor, Hospital PhysicianWho Shall Live? is, by far, the best book I have ever read on the subject of medicine as it relates to economics ... I think every physician or patient concerned about what may or may not happen to our health care system ought to buy this book, read it, and keep it available for reference.
